Valheim reaches version 1.0 on September 9. The release brings the Viking survival game to Windows PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2, with full cross-play across every platform.

That makes this a useful reset point for two groups: players who have been waiting for the early-access label to disappear, and returning players deciding whether to keep an old world or begin again.

What 1.0 adds

The Deep North is the headline addition. Iron Gate says the new biome brings fresh enemies, building content, bases, and weapons. Version 1.0 also adds more than 50 achievements.

The update includes practical work under the hood. Iron Gate lists faster saving and a reduction in the brief stutters that can happen while new zones load. Those changes matter in a game built around long expeditions and large player-made settlements.

Your existing world still works

Iron Gate says existing characters and worlds remain usable. Unexplored parts of an old map can generate the new biome content correctly, while places you have already explored will stay as they are.

The studio recommends starting a new world for the best experience. That is advice rather than a requirement. A returning group can keep its established base and characters, but starting fresh gives the updated world generation room to work everywhere.

The easiest way to decide

Start a new world if your group wants the full progression arc and does not mind rebuilding. Keep your old world if the settlement itself is the reason you want to return, then travel into unexplored territory for new content.

Cross-play makes the group decision simpler. Friends can join from PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5, or Nintendo Switch 2 without choosing the same platform first.

Valheim supports one to ten players. Iron Gate also says official mod support and Steam Workshop support are not part of the 1.0 launch, so heavily modified worlds deserve an extra compatibility check before updating.
